NASSAU, Bahamas — Baylor women’s golf shot a 12-over 296 to put itself in second place after one round of the White Sands Invitational on Saturday.

On a day when the wind was whipping, Sera Hasegawa was one of just three players to break par in round one with a 1-under 70. The senior sits just two shots off the pace set by Purdue’s Natasha Kiel.

The Boilermakers hold the team lead with 36 holes to play on the heels of a 7-over 291, five shots in front of the Bears and seven shots clear of third-place Texas A&M.

THE RUNDOWN
Starting on No. 4, Hasegawa made an early bogey at No. 5, balancing it out with her first birdie at No. 9. The senior’s second bogey came at No. 11, which would be her last of the day. The Gifu, Japan, native closed strong with birdies at Nos. 15 and 18 to finish the day in third place.

Silje Ohma continued her strong play with a 3-over 75 to finish the first round in a tie for ninth. Ohma dropped to 3-over with three bogeys on her first 10 holes at Nos. 5, 9 and 12. The junior closed the round at even par across the final eight holes with a birdie at No. 13 and a bogey at No. 16.

BaiMai Seema played a steady round in difficult conditions en route to a tie for 13th. The senior reached 1-under through six holes with a birdie at No. 7. Seema made the turn at 2-over, though, after a double-bogey at No. 10 before cruising home at 2-over on her inward half.

Jenny Lee carded a 6-over 77 in her first event as a member of the lineup, finishing the day tied for 23rd. After making a birdie at the first, she recorded a double-bogey at No. 2 and bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 to turn with a 3-over 38. A second double-bogey at No. 12 dropped her to 5-over before she added a final bogey at No. 17.

Bridget Boczar also started with a birdie at No. 1 but played the final eight holes of the front side at 5-over to turn with a 4-over 39. The junior closed the day with three more bogeys at Nos. 10, 14 and 15 to finish tied for 34th.

Yoonjeong Huh shot a 5-over 76 to lead Baylor’s trio of individuals in a tie for 19th. Ashleen Kaur carded a 6-over 77 to finish tied for 23rd, while Mallory Matthews shot a 7-over 78 to tie for 34th.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor tied for the best par-4 scoring average in the first round (4.20).
  *   The Bears’ 61 pars were the most on Saturday, six more than Mizzou’s 54, which ranked as the second-best.
  *   BU also had the fewest bogeys in the field with just 18.
  *   BaiMai Seema finished with the second-best par-3 scoring average in the first round (2.80)
  *   Silje Ohma carded one of just seven birdies at No. 13, which played as the third-hardest hole in round one.

QUOTABLE:
Head coach Jay Goble on the team’s performance in difficult conditions  — “Today was probably one of the windiest days of competition in my coaching career. The wind blew 25-35 miles per hour from start to finish, and every shot needed your utmost attention. Sera played a very solid round, to card a round in red figures on a day like this takes lots of patience and a strong ability to get balls up and down. She is ready for another strong day tomorrow. We will regroup and get ready to fight hard tomorrow.”
