PROVO, Utah – No. 18 Baylor volleyball fell to No. 23 BYU on Wednesday at Smith Fieldhouse, 3-0, despite tight sets.

The Bears (10-5, 2-2) and Cougars (10-5, 3-2) battled, the first two sets being close, 26-24, 25-21, before BYU took the third to finish it off, 25-13.

Baylor was led by Elise McGhee with 11 kills, Kendal Murphy with 10 digs, Jackie Barrett Frazier with 27 assists and Manuela Bibinbe with four blocks.

THE RUNDOWN
Set 1
BYU got the first point but Alicia Andrew quickly got one for the Bears, followed by a kill from Allie Sczech and a Lauren Briseño ace, up 3-2. Bibinbe got two kills with another from Elise McGhee making it 6-4, but the Cougars were ready to bounce back and went on a three-point run to go up by one before Bibinbe served an ace to tie it at 7-all. She then served an ace to bring her team ahead by one. The teams continued trading points with Andrew and McGhee getting kills, now 12-10 in the Bears’ favor. Another kill from Andrew tied it up at 13, and a media timeout came after BYU aced the Bears, 15-13. Bibibne and Kendal Murphy got the block at 16-15, BYU ahead by one. McGhee got two kills in a row to help spark some momentum and a huge bock from Sczech and Andrew put BU up by one, 19-18, BYU calling timeout. Out of it, the Cougars got a kill and block, prompting a Baylor timeout. Andrew got a kill out of the Bears’ pause to tie it at 20, and BYU went on a run of three, ended by Sczech with a tooled block, 23-21. She then teamed up with Bibinbe on the block, BYU calling timeout with the Bears within one. A kill from BYU made it set point and Baylor called time, 24-22. Murphy got a kill as play resumed, and a Cougar had an attack error to tie it at 24-all. A Baylor service error put BYU up one and a kill sealed the set, 26-24, in BYU’s favor.

Set 2
The Cougars started the second frame with a service error and then got two points, put to a stop by a kill from McGhee. Andrew tied it up at 3-3, then Murphy made them scramble, to tying it 4-4. Murphy and Bibinbe followed it up with a block before BYU got two kills of their own. Sczech had a dominant kill to sweep a Cougar off her feet, with Ulufatu following it up with an ace, up 7-6. BYU sparked a run with a kill and back-to-back service aces, ended with a kill from Murphy that was unsuccessfully challenged by the Cougars, BU down 8-9. The Bears weren’t behind for long as Bibinbe and Jackie Barrett Frazier teamed up for the block to tie it back at 9-9. McGhee tied it once more at 10-all, only for BYU to go on a run of two, challenging their third error unsuccessfully, the score now 12-11 with Baylor down one. Andrew got a kill but the teams kept trading points, the media timeout falling at 15-13, BYU. Murphy got another kill out of the pause, but the Cougars collected three more points including a Cougar’s third ace of the night. Grace Carroll entered the match and immediately got a kill, tooling the block to make it 16-18. After another kill and ace from BYU, Baylor called time, down 20-16. Points were traded, but Carroll again delivered with an emphatic kill, now down three, 21-18. Sczech got another kill, successfully challenged by McGuyre, then McGhee had another kill to make it 22-20. Sczech delivered again with a kill, again successfully challenged by McGuyre, still down just two points, 23-21. Despite the Bears clawing back, BYU threw down two kills to take the set, 25-21.

Set 3
BYU had the first kill out of the gate with McGhee following it up. Trading again, Murphy got a kill, making it 2-2. Three-straight errors from the Bears put the Cougars up 6-2, but it was stopped by a BYU service error and attack error. But the Cougars got right back at it, up 9-4 and BU calling timeout. Baylor continued having trouble kicking it into gear while BYU kept its foot on the gas; McGuyre called timeout again at 11-4. The onslaught continued, the Cougars up 15-4 when Murphy got a kill. A spark ignited, McGhee followed suit, then got another at 17-7. Heating up, McGhee scored again at 20-8 and Sczech pitched in at 21-9. The Cougars made a few mistakes from the service line and net, but the Bears continued to battle. Despite the comeback effort, irreparable damage had been done, and the Cougars took the set 25-13.
