HOUSTON -- Getting three fourth-quarter turnovers, the Baylor Bears overcame a shaky offensive second half to come away with a hard-fought 20-10 victory over the Houston Cougars Saturday night at TDECU Stadium for their fifth-consecutive win.
With losses by BYU and Colorado, Baylor (7-4, 5-3) is now tied for fifth place in the Big 12 standings and just a game out of first, with an outside shot at making the Dec. 7 Big 12 Championship game at AT&T Stadium.
Sawyer Robertson threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns, but the redshirt junior quarterback was picked off three times, including a pick-six by Jeremiah Wilson. Bryson Jackson recorded his third-straight and fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 113 yards on 28 carries.
Lorando “Snaxx” Johnson picked off Zeon Chriss at the Cougars’ 33, setting up a 50-yard field goal by Isaiah Hankins that put this one away. The Bears also recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and got their third interception of the game in the final minute on a pick by Devin Lemear.
Baylor held Houston (4-7, 3-5) to just 239 yards total offense, including 92 yards on the ground. Linebacker Keaton Thomas had a team-high 10 tackles and recorded two of the team’s three tackles for losses.
After an exchange of interceptions on each team’s first possession, including a pick in the end zone by safety Devyn Bobby, Robertson engineered a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive that was led by the running of Bryson Jackson.
Robertson converted on a fourth-down play with a 10-yard pass to Josh Cameron and then hooked up with tight end Michael Trigg for a five-yard TD pass that gave the Bears the 7-0 lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter.
That lead didn’t last through the first of the quarter, though, as Wilson got his second interception of the night and returned it 41 yards for the tying touchdown with 32 ticks left in the first period.
The Bears answered right back, going 74 yards in 11 plays and scoring on Robertson’s 23-yard TD strike to Ashtyn Hawkins for the 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. Baylor converted on three third-down plays, all on short runs by Washington.
Eating up the final six minutes off the clock, Baylor marched 59 yards in 11 plays and tacked on a 45-yard field goal by Hankins to make it a 17-7 game going into the locker room. Baylor had a third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, but the snap went over Washington’s head all the way back to the 27 for a 25-yard loss.
With Baylor running just three offensive plays in the third quarter and getting sacked twice, Houston had the ball for nearly 13 minutes, but the Cougars had nothing to show for it.
Jack Martin missed a 47-yard field goal wide left before nailing a 24-yarder in the fourth quarter that made it a one-score game, 17-10.
Baylor closes out the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. on ESPN2, with a matchup against a hot Kansas team (5-6, 4-4) that has beat three-straight ranked teams. The Jayhawks knocked off 16th-ranked Colorado, 37-21, Saturday afternoon in Lawrence.
