WACO, Texas – Baylor women’s basketball head coach Nicki Collen announced the addition of Florida transfer Aliyah Matharu to the roster in time for conference play on Tuesday morning. Matharu will join the Bears after stops at Mississippi State, Texas and Florida and has one season of eligibility remaining.

“We are thrilled with the addition of Aliyah to our backcourt,” said Collen. “She fits perfectly into our style of play with her speed in transition with or without the ball in her hands. Aliyah is an elite playmaking guard who has the ability to get downhill to the rim as well as make 3’s. Her defensive pressure will help raise the level of our defense and will give us depth on our short roster this season. Our fans are going to love the intensity she plays with every time she steps on the court.”

In her single season on the court in Florida, Matharu played in 30 of the Gators’ 32 contests with 23 starts. She led the team in scoring with 570 points on a 19 points per game average. She also led Florida with 73 assists and 81 steals. Matharu’s 35-point performance against Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament was a career-high for the senior and was the SEC’s 10th-most points scored in tournament history. The banner day ended with her shooting 14-of-25 from the floor, adding eight rebounds and four steals.

Ending the 2023-24 season, Matharu ranked second in scoring in the SEC.

An Honorable Mention All-Big 12 pick in her season in Austin, Matharu led Texas with 431 points, 12 per game, and sunk 77 3-pointers with time in all 36 games, all figures that led the Longhorns’ roster. Her .421 performance behind the arc ranked No. 2 in the Big 12 and 16th in the NCAA.

In two back-to-back contests against Baylor that season, Matharu combined for 27 points, going 4-for-6 from three in Waco. Later that season in the Big 12 Tournament, Matharu’s 5-point and 2-rebound performance assisted the Longhorns to their only win over Baylor in 2022, 67-58.

Year No. 1 at Mississippi State saw two SEC Freshman of the Week honors after big performances against Arkansas (18 points, seven rebounds), Ole Miss (24 points, five 3-pointers), Vanderbilt (11-point fourth quarter) and South Carolina (10 points in 2:05).

Back again in Starkville for her sophomore year, Matharu averaged 10.2 points in 21.7 minutes, scoring 11 times in double figures.

Matharu was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2021 and 2023 and Academic All-Big 12 in 2022.

Before college, Matharu was espnW HoopGurlz’ Stock-Riser of the Year in 2019, averaging 17.7 points her senior season at Bishop McNamara High School outside of Washington, D.C., and was rated as a five-star recruit.
