Editor’s Note: This is the third of a Summer series allowing the Baylor fans to get to know some of the elite student-athletes from the equestrian team on BaylorBears.com.

A native of Raleigh, N.C., Molly Roberts – a jumping seat competitor – completed her junior year in 2023-24. A product of Crossroad Flex High School in Cary, N.C., Roberts has been a two-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and was selected to the 2023 NCEA Academic Honor Roll.

At what age did you begin competing in equestrian events?

Molly Roberts: I started showing in the fourth grade.

Why did you start competing in equestrian?

MR: I always loved horses and took riding lessons from an early age. I begged my parents to let me show at our local barn show and they finally gave in. It helped develop my work ethic and allowed me to strive for bigger goals within the sport.

What is your earliest memory of riding?

MR: My earliest memory was my 6th birthday when me and my dad went on a trail ride for my birthday at a small western farm in North Carolina.

Who is a current/former collegiate or professional athlete whom you admire and why?

MR: Laura Kraut is a big inspiration to me in our sport. She will be the only woman on our Olympic Jumping team in Paris 2024. She has had numerous Olympic appearances and won multiple medals. I love the way she rides and treats her horses. She is a great horsewoman whom I admire.

What family members have made the biggest impact on your life and why?

MR: I have one brother named Dillon. He is 23 and lives in Raleigh N.C., with my mom Annie Roberts and my dad Jim Roberts. My parents have both had a major impact on my life. They both worked hard to allow me to pursue my dreams in this sport. My mom's determined attitude definitely rubbed off on me at a young age. She gave me the confidence to pursue my passions and keep trying when things didn’t always work out. I am forever grateful to the sacrifices my family made to make me who I am today.

What are your strengths in your discipline? What are the areas you are currently trying to work on the most?

MR: My biggest strength in my riding is definitely my ability to relax. I love riding horses that tend to think a little faster. I am good at getting them to take a breath and pay attention to what I am asking them to do. I would say the thing I am working on most is consistency throughout my patterns and courses.

Why did you decide to attend Baylor?

MR: I chose Baylor for its academics and athletics. I wanted a school where I could continue my equestrian endeavors while getting a great education that would lead me into my career. The Baylor Family is a community that is unmatched. The friendships and memories I have made will last a lifetime. The support Baylor provides as well as the spiritual development piece are aspects of my college experience that have been monumental for my character formation.

What is your academic major and why did you select that major?

MR: My major is Apparel Design. I came into college as a business major and knew instantly that it was not what I wanted to do. I took a big jump and decided to switch to a less traditional major that I had a passion for. I have always loved fashion and art. I am so in love with my major and have enjoyed all the people I have met along the way. My major has opened so many doors for me including internships, and an exclusive trip to New York Fashion Week. I am so grateful for my professors and peers who have been so supportive through this journey.

What are your career goals and why do you have an interest in pursuing that particular career?

MR: I hope to one day be a designer or work on a design team in the fashion industry. I love creating pieces that give people confidence and makes them feel beautiful. Combining real world concepts and structure with my clothing design has been a recent passion of mine. This summer I will be interning at Lela Rose in NYC and I can’t wait to apply my passion outside of the classroom.

What do you enjoy doing outside of equestrian and school?

MR: Outside of equestrian and school I have a passion for animal rescue. In the last two years I have fostered over 30 cats with a few dogs in between. I have loved animals for as long as I can remember. Coming to college I quickly found ways to help many of the animals in our community in need. While it has been hard work, I have met many new friends and had a lot of fun in the process. Aside from my animals I also enjoy hanging out with friends and have recently picked up pickleball. I am also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority which I am an active member in.

Do you have any pets? What are their names and what role do they play in your life?

MR: I currently have a cat in Waco and three dogs at home in North Carolina. A King Charles named Trixie, a wiener dog named Hans, and a pit bull named Mariachi that I rescued in Waco last year. My cats named is Judy and she was the start of my Waco animal rescuing. I had never had a cat and in the summer of 2022, I got Judy with her five kittens. After raising and reforming her kittens I found a new love for cats. I continued to foster and bottle feed abandoned kittens throughout the next year and a half. Every few weeks I would find a dog and rehome them as well. Judy taught me the true importance of animal rescue. It is our responsibility to do right by the animals we domesticate. Judy is the sweetest cat in the world and I couldn’t imagine going through college without her. She has not only had an impact on me, but also the lives of all the cats I fostered after her.
