WACO, Texas – Baylor's Johnny Keefer was named to the 2024 All-Big 12 team, announced by the conference on Friday afternoon.
The nod marks Keefer’s second All-Big 12 selection and his first since 2022. He joins Jimmy Walker, Ryan Baca and Kyle Jones as the only BU players to make multiple All-Big 12 teams. Named to the PING All-America Second Team on Wednesday, Keefer is the only three-time All-American in program history.
His stellar senior season saw him finish outside the top 25 just once while carding a team-leading two top-5s, five top-10s and 10 top-25s. Additionally, he paced Baylor in below-par percentage (23.2%), par-or-better percentage (83.8%), total birdies (139), par-4 scoring average (4.02) and par-5 scoring average (4.60).
In the process of re-writing the BU history books this season, Keefer passed PGA Tour member and major champion Jimmy Walker for BU's career stroke-average mark with a 71.45, while establishing the Bears’ 54-hole scoring record with a 12-under 198 at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. Keefer’s second-round 64 in Chapel Hill ranks as the fourth-best single-round in BU history and tied for the lowest postseason round in program history.
With his tie for sixth at Whispering Pines, he became the 17th player in program history to earn Big 12 All-Tournament team honors, lifting the Baylor to a fourth-place finish, its best since 2002.
The only two-time Big 12 Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year in conference history, Keefer leaves Baylor with, not only the career stroke-average record, but also can lay claim to three of the 10-best single-season stroke averages. His 19-career top-10s are tied for the fourth-most in Baylor history, while his 10-career top-5s are seventh-most.
In the wake of Keefer’s tie for 11th at the NCAA Championship, the senior finished 25th in the PGA Tour University's rankings. That ranking earned him automatic status on the PGA Tour Americas, the second player in program history to earn professional status through the PGA Tour U program.
The San Antonio, Texas, native enjoyed the best season of his BU career, matching his personal achievements with team success. The fifth-year senior led the team in stroke average for a third-straight season and helped his squad reach the NCAA Championship for the sixth time in the last eight full seasons. The Bears’ 14th-place finish at La Costa was the third-best in program history. Keefer's tie for 11th was the highest finish by a Baylor individual in NCAA Championship history.
Keefer is joined on the All-Big 12 squad by Cincinnati’s Ty Gingerich, Houston’s Santiago de la Fuente, Oklahoma’s Ben Lorenz, Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout, TCU’s Gustav Frimodt, Texas’ Christiaan Maas and Nathan Petronzio, and Texas Tech’s Calum Scott and Tyran Sanders.
