WACO, Texas – Baylor baseball junior right-handed pitcher Mason Marriott was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth round of the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft Monday afternoon.
Marriott, the 194th overall selection, becomes the 154th Bear to be drafted all-time. The pick marks the fifth time in the last six seasons that Baylor has had a top-six round selection. BU has now had picks in 32 of the last 34 drafts, dating back to 1991. Marriott is the first Bear to be drafted under second-year head coach Mitch Thompson.
Across his three-year career with the Bears, Marriott went 6-17 on the mound and posted a 6.55 ERA. He struck out 137 batters and walked 103 in 154 innings of work. In 2024, the junior righty notched career highs with 69.2 innings pitched and 65 strikeouts while making all 14 of his scheduled starts. He added five saves in his rookie season in which he made 17 relief appearances, before becoming one of the more dependable weekend arms for Baylor in 2023 and 2024. Marriott finished his career without missing a start in two seasons as part of the weekend rotation.
A two-time Academic All-Big 12 Team selection and Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member, Marriott found his most success and growth in the 2024 season and came out of the gates hot, becoming the first Bear in 14 years to strike out 10 or more batters in an Opening Day start. For his outstanding effort, Marriott was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 19 after the season-opening weekend. Marriott led the squad with eight starts of five or more innings while allowing three earned runs or fewer and recorded five or more strikeouts in seven of his 14 starts.
Marriott is the third Bear all-time to be drafted by the Diamondbacks, joining Jake Miller (2013) and Josh Ford (2005). Additionally, two BU alumni signed with Arizona as undrafted free agents in West Tunnell (2016) and Bryan Loeb (2000).
The 2024 MLB Draft concludes on Tuesday with rounds 11-20 streaming on MLB.com.
