WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Baylor women’s basketball newcomer Waiata Jennings was named to the 2degrees Tall Ferns Select Team by Basketball New Zealand to play in the Japan Friendly Tour, announced by the organization last month.

With competition slated for July 4 and 6 in Tokyo, Jennings suits up for two games against the ninth-ranked Japan team joining Amiee Book, Ella Bradley, Grace Hunter, Eva Langton, Tara Manumaleuga, Esra McGoldrick, Lilly Parke, Tera Reed, Lilly Taulelei, Tahlia Tupaea and Lauren Whittaker.

The Japan Friendly Tour is the first time Jennings has represented Basketball New Zealand on the 2degrees Tall Ferns Select Team after being named to the Junior Tall Ferns in 2020. Hunter, McGoldrick, Reed and Tupaea are returning national team members who played on the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup squad that went 3-3 in the Australia-based tournament with wins over South Korea, Lebanon and the Philippines.

Awaiting her first year with the Bears after two standout seasons on the history-making Collin College squad, Jennings holds the Lady Cougar record for career points at 1,227 in her two years. She was a two-time NTJCAC Player of the Year, an NJCAA First (2024) and Second Team (2023) All-American and was named the World Exposure Junior College DI Freshman of the Year in 2023.

The 2degrees Tall Ferns will be coached by former assistant Aik Ho, Marquette’s Director of Player Development Chaz Franklin and Jennings’ premier team coach at St Peter’s Cambridge Leanne Walker.

The friendly series with Japan gears up the New Zealand national team for the FIBA World Cup Pre-Qualifiers in Mexico scheduled for August.
