SAN ANTONIO – Baylor men’s golf used a 3-under 285 to jump into second place on Sunday during the second round of the Valero Texas Collegiate at TPC San Antonio.

Johnny Keefer and Luke Dossey were among the three Bears in the lineup that carded scores in red figures to aid in BU’s climb up the leaderboard. Keefer finds himself in a tie for the lead with TCU’s Gustav Frimodt, while Dossey is four shots back in a tie for seventh.

BU enters Monday’s final round one shot behind first-place TCU, and they are one of just three teams under par through two rounds.

THE RUNDOWN
Keefer opened with an early birdie at No. 2 before running into trouble with a double bogey at four and a bogey at five. He closed the front nine with one more birdie at No. 7 to make the turn with a 1-over 37. The San Antonio native turned to the back nine, and for a second-straight day, he went low with four birdies at Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 to shoot a back-nine 32 for a second-straight round.

Dossey suffered his only blemish of the day with a bogey at No. 1, but settled in with four-straight pars and a couple of birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 to make the turn with a 1-under 35. The senior put together a clean card on the back nine, pushing to 2-under with a birdie at No. 14.

Zach Heffernan made an 11-shot improvement on Sunday with a 1-under 71, gaining him seven spots in the individual standings to 64th. Playing just miles from his hometown of Boerne, Heffernan got hot early with three-straight birdies at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 before giving a shot back with a bogey at No. 8. Following a pair of bogeys to open the back nine, the junior carded a fourth birdie of the day at No. 12. He traded a bogey for a birdie at Nos. 16 and 17 to secure his round in red figures.

Trey Bosco finished the day in a tie for 45th place after a 2-over 74. Bosco dropped over par with a double bogey at No. 4 and made the turn with a 3-over 39 following a bogey at No. 9. On the inward half, the senior carded his first birdie of the day at No. 11, and after bogeys at Nos. 12 and 15, he closed strong with birdies at Nos. 17 and 18.

Jonas Appel shot a 6-over 78 on Sunday to move to 7-over for the tournament and in a tie for 52nd. The sophomore opened with a double bogey at No. 1 and added bogeys at Nos. 3 and 9 to turn with a 4-over 40. He opened the back nine with five-straight pars, before closing his round with bogeys at Nos. 15 and 17.

Freshman Davis Ovard continued to impress in his collegiate debut with an even-par 72 on Sunday, good enough to pull into a tie for 26th. He got off to a good start on the front nine with a couple of birdies at Nos. 2 and 5 to push to 2-under, but made the turn with a 1-under after a bogey at No. 8. The Frisco native opened the back nine with a birdie before dropped shots at 15 and 17 put him at even for the round.
