KAPOLEI, Hawaii – Baylor women’s golf got off to a strong start Monday, sitting alone in first place at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational after a 3-under 285 at Kapolei Golf Course.

After 18 holes, Rosie Belsham is tied for second on the heels of a bogey-free front nine en route to a team-leading 3-under 69, leading the Bears to first place.

Baylor currently leads by a shot over New Mexico State, who shot a 2-under 286. Angela Garvin from New Mexico State leads the individuals at 5-under 67, just two shots clear of Belsham.

THE RUNDOWN
Belsham set a precedent for her round with a birdie on her first hole of the day, before adding two more birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. Her one blemish of the day was a bogey on No. 14. The senior finished with another birdie on No. 1 and headed back to the clubhouse at 3-under 69.

Sera Hasegawa followed Belsham’s lead, collecting five birdies in her round. Following a bogey on No. 3, a birdie on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 8, Hasegawa sat at 1-over through nine. At the turn, she claimed a birdie at No. 10 and a double bogey at No. 11. She finished the back nine with three birdies on Nos. 14, 17 and 18. Hasegawa finished tied for seventh at 1-under 71.

Baylor’s Yoonjeong Huh fired an even-par 72 to sit in a tie for 12th after Monday. The freshman opened with a birdie and a bogey at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, before carding nine straight pars to remain at even par. Huh traded a birdie at Nos. 15 for a bogey at No. 16 Huh, before dropping back into red figures with a birdie at No. 18. She closed out the round with one final bogey at No. 2, her penultimate hole.

Ashleen Kaur finished day one with a 1-over 73 and in a tie for 19th. The freshman opened with a pair of bogeys at Nos. 1 and 3 but dropped back into red figures with a birdie at No. 6 and an eagle at No. 7. She made the turn at even after a bogey at No. 8. Kaur briefly dropped back into red figures with a birdie at No. 10, before falling back over par with a double-bogey at No. 11, where she would stay, playing her final seven holes at even par.

Britta Snyder opened her round with eight straight pars and dropped into red figures through nine, following a birdie at No. 10. An ensuing bogey put her back at even for the round, where she would stay for seven more holes. A double-bogey seven at her final hole of the day, No. 1, cost her two more shots as she would finish the day with a 2-over 74 and a tie for 23rd.

Baylor had three Bears compete individually. BaiMai Seema led the individuals with an even-par 72 and is tied for 12th overall. Hannah Herbel finished the day with a 9-over 81, and Mallory Matthews carded a 12-over 84.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor leads the teams in par-4 scoring average (3.96).
  *   The Bears have 17 birdies, the most of the tournament.
  *   BaiMai Seema leads the individuals in par-5 scoring average (4.50).
  *   Seema is currently tied for 12th on the golf course where she captured the lone top-15 finish of her career.
  *   Ashleen Kaur is tied for the most eagles with one overall.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Jay Goble — “I was happy to see us get off to a solid start today and put ourselves in a good position heading into round two. With all five players in the lineup and BaiMai, inside the top 25 after round one, there are a lot of positives that we can build on heading into tomorrow.”
