WACO, Texas – Baylor acrobatics & tumbling earned two of the three possible weekly awards from the NCATA, the organization announced Wednesday.

Kamryn Kitchens was named Athlete of the Week while Jordan Gruendler earned Specialist of the Week after their performances in the win over Oregon on April 1. It was the third week in a row for the Bears, with the duo earning the awards after competition.

Kitchens, a senior top and tumbler from Kennesaw, Ga., competed in 10 heats as well as the team event against Oregon. She competes in at least one heat in all events throughout the meet. Her performance included eight scores of 9.55 or higher, helping the Bears earn six scores at 9.70 or higher, including a 9.875 in the Open Pass for Tumbling.

Gruendler, a San Antonio, Texas, native, competed as a top in the first and third pyramid heats for the Bears. In the inversion pyramid, earning a 9.95 against the Ducks, she performed an extended handstand on a mid-level base before dismounting from the handstand in a free fall. In the open pyramid, earning a perfect 10 for the first time this season, she executed an extended straddle press to handstand on a mid-level base. With Gruendler on the mat in the pyramid event, Baylor averages a score of 19.89 out of a possible 20.

With Gruendler’s latest accolade, BU has now earned the Specialist award after each week of the Bears’ meets this season. This is Gruendler’s third time earning the accolade and Baylor’s fifth overall for the season. Kitchens and Gruendler have earned the accolades as a duo in week 6, 8 and 9 of competition, having not competed in week 7.

Gianna Cameron, a base and tumbler, earned Honorable Mention Freshman of the Week.

The Bears hit the mats next on April 9 in Honolulu, Hawaii, against Hawaii Pacific. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. CT in the Shark Tank.
