WACO, Texas – Baylor women's golf finished tied for sixth after the opening round of the Schooner Fall Classic Saturday at Belmar Golf Club.

Baylor’s 4-under 276 is seven shots behind Florida State, who leads after a 13-under 267 in round one.

Silje Ohma made a strong first impression in her collegiate debut with a 3-under 67. The freshman recovered from bogeys at Nos. 1 and 7 with five birdies at Nos. 10, 12, 16 and 18 to finish round one in a tie for ninth.

Another newcomer, Sera Hasegawa, finished under par in her Baylor debut. The sophomore transfer climbed into the top-5 at 3-under par through eight holes before closing the front nine with her first bogey of the day at No. 9. She closed with an even-par back nine thanks to birdies at Nos. 13 and 16 offset by bogeys at Nos. 11 and 15.

BaiMai Seema also spent part of her day in the top-5, thanks to four birdies in her first eight holes. A bogey at No. 6 put her at 3-under after nine holes. She added another birdie at no. 10 before a bogey at No. 11 and double bogeys at Nos. 13 and 14. Seema closed with a birdie at two pars for an even-par 70 in a tie for 36th.

Rosie Belsham is tied for 48th after round one with a 1-over 71. Belsham got off to a steady start with eight-straight pars and a birdie on the front nine. Belsham parred her next five holes before a birdie at No. 15 saw her climb to 2-under before bogeys at Nos. 16, 17 and 18.

Britta Snyder played steady throughout the day with 16 pars en route to a 2-over 72 and a tie for 59th. The only blemishes for the junior came with bogeys at Nos. 6 and 7.

Senior Anika Veintemilla played as an individual and shot a 7-over 77 to finish in a tie for 81st. She opened and closed her front nine with birdies at Nos. 10 and 18 with bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17. Veintemilla closed with a 7-over 43 on her inward nine.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Silje Ohma’s 67 was BU's lowest score since Gurleen Kaur shot a 67 in the second round of the NCAA Stillwater Regional last May.
  *   Sera Hasegawa’s shot 68 or better for the third time in her collegiate career.
  *   Britta Snyder’s 16 pars tied for the most in the field on Saturday.
  *   BaiMai Seema, Ohma and Hasegawa tied for the second-most birdies with six.

Head coach Jay Goble on the play of Silje Ohma– “I'm really proud of Silje,” he said. “Walking with her all day, she was two-over par after her first seven holes, but she stayed really patient out there, which was which was cool to see. It's easy to get ahead of yourself when you know you have to make birdies somewhere, but she kept hitting good shots and stayed patient to play the last 10 holes at five under, which was fun to watch.”
