NORMAN, Okla. – Johnny Keefer shot a 3-under 69 for the second time in three days on Wednesday at the Norman Regional to finish as the best individual at Jimmie Austin Golf Club.

The junior finished four shots back of South Carolina’s Evans Lewis, who shot a 6-under 210 to claim the individual berth into the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk.

Keefer’s 69 tied for the third-best round of the day and was one of just six sub-70 rounds recorded in the final round.

Needing to make up ground starting the day, Keefer opened strong with a pair-of birdies on the front nine, including a third birdie in as many days at the par-5 8th, en route to a bogey-free 34 on the front nine.

Chasing down Lewis, Keefer made a birdie at the 11th to get to 3-under and within three shots with seven holes to play, but a bogey at the 12th dropped him back to 2-under. From there, he made five-straight pars and closed with a birdie at No. 18 to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 3-under 213.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Keefer is the fifth player in program history to shoot two sub-70 rounds in an NCAA regional.

• He finished his season with a stroke average of 71.34, the seventh-best single-season average in program history.

• He lowered his career stroke average to 71.74 to maintain the second-best mark in program history, trailing only Jimmy Walker’s 71.55 from 1997-01.

• The junior finished the year with a team-leading 18 rounds at par or better, giving him 37 for his career.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Head coach Mike McGraw: “Johnny had a terrific week. He left a few shots out there, but didn’t miss a single putt inside 7 feet, so that’s really good. He hung in there when things got going bad and kept his attitude positive and stayed calm. He played well, and I was proud to be his coach this week.”
