IRVING, Texas – James Akinjo and Kendall Brown were honored as Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, when the Big 12 Conference weekly awards were announced Monday.
The pair was instrumental in Baylor’s two wins last week, securing the program’s second-straight Big 12 Title. Akinjo was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the second time this season (Jan. 3) and picked up his fourth Big 12 weekly award of the season, while Brown won Co-Newcomer of the week, earning his second such award (Dec. 20). Monday’s announcement marks the second time this season Baylor has won both weekly awards (Jan. 10). This week’s honors mark the sixth and seventh Big 12 weekly awards for the Bears this season.
Akinjo closed out the regular season in style, averaging 19.5 points, 6.5 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals while playing a team-high 37.8 minutes per game. The conference’s leader in assists facilitated early in BU’s game at No. 21 Texas with four first-half assists and four points. In the second half, the senior scored 15 points, including six of Baylor’s final eight points. He led the Bears in points (19), assists (seven), rebounds (career-high eight), steals (two) and minutes (38) to help seal the 68-61 road win in Austin.
In Baylor’s Big 12-clinching victory against Iowa State, the Arizona transfer had a game-high 20 points, four rebounds, six assists, and two steals. It took another strong second-half from the senior to fend off a comeback from the Cyclones with 13 points and four assists in the final 20 minutes. After Iowa State regained the lead with 3:52 to play, Akinjo scored Baylor’s next five points to put the Bears back in front for good.
Brown averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting 62 percent from the field and making all three 3-point attempts in wins at No. 21 Texas and vs. Iowa State. In the conference-clinching win over Iowa State, Brown notched his team-leading third double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. His 16 points were a career-high in Big 12 play and were punctuated with a pair of highlight-reel dunks, adding to his team lead with 41.
The Cottage Grove, Minn., native, began the week with 13 points and five rebounds in a 68-61 win at Texas. Brown helped the Bears hang in early against the Horns netting 12 first-half points, including his only two three-point attempts of the game. At the time, his 13-points tied a career-high in a Big 12 game and marked his 18th double-digit scoring output of the season.
The No. 2 seed Bears open play at the 2022 Big 12 Championship with Thursday’s quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 seed Oklahoma at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN. The winner of that game will face the winner of Thursday’s 8:30 p.m. quarterfinal between No. 3 seed Texas Tech and No. 6 seed Iowa State. That semifinal game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Friday, and the championship game is at 5 p.m. Saturday.
