BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Baylor forwards Jeremy Sochan, and Kendall Brown were both selected in the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday night at Barclays Center. Sochan was chosen No. 9 overall in the first round by the San Antonio Spurs, while Brown was selected No. 48 overall in the second round by the Minnesota Timberwolves, with reports that he’ll be traded to the Indiana Pacers.
With the two picks tonight, Baylor has had 10 NBA Draft picks in the last 10 drafts, the most of any team in the state of Texas and the second-most in the Big 12 Conference since 2012. The Bears have accounted for 10 of 30 draft picks from Texas universities since 2012.
BU has had eleven NBA Draft picks in the Drew era – Ekpe Udoh (No. 6 in 2010), Perry Jones III (No. 28 in 2012), Quincy Acy (No. 37 in 2012), Quincy Miller (No. 38 in 2012), Pierre Jackson (No. 42 in 2014), Cory Jefferson (No. 60 in 2014), Taurean Prince (No. 12 in 2017), Davion Mitchell (No. 9 in 2021) Jared Butler (No. 40 in 2021), Sochan (No. 9 in 2022) and Brown (No. 48 in 2022).
Sochan’s selection marks the fourth top-10 draft pick in program history behind Mitchell (No. 9 in 2021), Udoh (No. 6 in 2010) and Vinnie Johnson (No. 7 in 1979), and he’s the eighth first-round pick in program history. Thursday marked the first time BU has had lottery picks in consecutive seasons. The Bears have now had 24 all-time draft picks. Sochan and Brown combine to give the Bears multiple draft picks in the same season for the fourth time, following Micheal Williams and Darryl Middleton in 1988; Jones III, Miller and Acy in 2012, and Mitchell and Butler in 2021.
Brown is the first Baylor player selected by the Minnesota franchise, while Sochan joins Carlos Briggs (1986, No. 79 overall) and Corey Jefferson (2014, No. 60 overall) as the third BU player drafted by the San Antonio Spurs.
Fellow draft-eligible Baylor player James Akinjo is now eligible to sign a free agent contract with any NBA team.
Akinjo, Sochan and Brown helped lead the Bears to back-to-back conference championships for the first time since 1949-1950, becoming the first Big 12 program other than Kansas to win back-to-back conference titles since Iowa State in 2000-2001. The trio helped keep Baylor’s streak of 49-straight weeks ranked in the top 10.
Sochan was named the 2022 Big 12 Sixth-Man of the Year, a member of the All-Big 12 Freshman Team and was All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. Brown, a two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, made the All-Big 12 Freshman Team and was one of 10 small forwards named to the Julius Erving Award Top 10 Watch List in February. Akinjo earned All-America Honors in his lone season at Baylor and was named one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, which honors the nation’s top point guard. Akinjo was also named to the All-Big 12 First team by the league’s coaches and the Associated Press.
