WACO, Texas – Baylor senior Ben Sims was named to the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy watch list, released by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., on Thursday.
Sims spends time away from the football field reading to children at local elementary schools. He also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from 2019-2021 and participated in the Baylor Athletics Leadership Institute in the spring of 2021.
In the classroom, the environmental studies major has been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll six times and twice named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, most recently in 2021.
On the field, Sims has played in 31 career games with 20 starts. The native of San Antonio, Texas, has 47 career receptions, including a career-best 31 for 361 yards and six touchdowns in 2021. His nine touchdown receptions are the most by a tight end in BU history, and his 47 career receptions rank as the fifth-most by a tight end in program history. The former Clark Cougar also added a rushing touchdown on his career-first carry against Texas on Oct. 30, 2021.
Named to the Mackey Award Watch List last week, the senior also received nods to the All-Big 12 Team, Athlon All-Big 12 First Team, Phil Steele All-Big 12 First Team and Dave Campbell's Texas Football All-Texas First Team this preseason.
The 2022 Wuerffel watch list includes 115 players, and Sims is one of 10 selections from the Big 12 Conference on the list.
Named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. The trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service worldwide.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information Departments and close on October 14. An up-to-date list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org<https://www.wuerffeltrophy.org/> beginning on August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 1, and finalists will be announced on November 22.
The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 8, and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on February 24, 2023.
