WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s golf will make its return to the Ocean Course in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Sunday at the Cabo Collegiate.
In their last visit to Cabo San Lucas, the Bears finished fifth in 2020, the last event of the COVID-19 shortened 2019-2020 season. In the wake of the pandemic, the 2021 event was played stateside at The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. Head coach Mike McGraw is looking forward to taking his team back to Mexico this time around.
“We are always excited about this tournament,” McGraw said. “Obviously, it is a good time of year to be in a warm climate, but more importantly, it is always a great test for us because the field is one of the best we will see during the entire regular season. Two of our players, Johnny Keefer and Mark Reppe, competed here two years ago, so they are both familiar with the course. Johnny was the individual runner-up that year."
Keefer will play at the anchor position for the sixth time this season. As a freshman in 2020, the junior held the 36-hole lead before he finished tied for second in, what turned out to be, the final event of the season. After shooting par or better in four of his last six rounds, the San Antonio native will look to build on his second top-10 finish of the season, a tie for ninth at the Border Olympics.
Mark Reppe plays out of the No. 2 spot this week. Sunday will mark his 27th-career tournament and his second start at the Cabo Collegiate. The senior finished in a tie for 47th at this event in 2020.
After notching a career-best fifth-place finish at the Border Olympics earlier this month, Luke Morgan will play at No. 3, looking to build on that momentum.
Sophomore Trey Bosco will make his second-consecutive start in the lineup and will play at the No. 4 spot. In his last start, Bosco improved his score each day on the way to a tie for 61st at the Border Olympics.
Freshman Zach Heffernan will play at No. 5 this week, making his third start of the season in the lineup. Heffernan's best finish in a stroke-play event was a tie for 66th at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational last fall.
The tournament will begin with a 7:00 a.m. CT shotgun start. Live stats can be found on golfstat.com<https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=24564>. For more information on Baylor Men’s Golf, follow @BaylorMGolf on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
