Baylor Men’s Golf Wins Rice Intercollegiate

THE RUNDOWN
HOUSTON – Baylor men’s golf opened its spring season by winning the Rice Intercollegiate with a 36-hole score of 13-under-par 563 on Monday afternoon at Houston’s Westwood Golf Club.

Baylor’s Colin Kober and Johnny Keefer shared the individual title with matching scores of 5-under-par 139. Kober shot 2-under 70 in the first round and followed with a 3-under 69 in the second round, while Keefer started with a 1-over 73 in the morning before finishing with a career-best 6-under 66 in the afternoon.

Ryan Grider tied for third place at 3-under 141 after a bogey-free final round of 4-under 68. Trey Bosco tied for ninth place at 1-over 145, while Tyler Isenhart tied for 16th place at 4-over 148 and Brandon Hoff tied for 24th place at 7-over 151. The Bears also had two individuals competing in the tournament, with Luke Morgan finishing tied for 22nd place at 6-over 150 in his collegiate debut, and Luke Dossey tying for 26th place at 8-over 152.

Baylor (-13) finished in front of Houston (-7), Sam Houston State (+6), Lamar (+12), Rice (+30) and Houston Baptist (+31).

BU led the tournament with 45 birdies, and the Bears had the top four players in par-4 scoring average, with Kober leading the way at 4-under 3.80, followed by Grider and Bosco at 2-under 3.90 and Keefer at 1-under 3.95.

HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor led the six-team field in par-3 scoring (+6, 3.13), par-4 scoring (+1, 4.01), par-5 scoring (-8, 4.83) and birdies (45). BU was second with 132 pars.
  *   Keefer led the 44-player field in par-5 scoring at 6-under 4.25, while Kober tied for third at 4-under 4.50 and Isenhart and Morgan tied for ninth at 2-under 4.75.
  *   Grider, Isenhart and Bosco tied for third in par-3 scoring at even-par 3.00, while Hoff tied for eighth at 1-over 3.13.
  *   Keefer led the tournament with 12 birdies, while Kober and Grider tied for second with nine birdies apiece.
  *   Isenhart and Dossey tied for third with 25 pars, and Hoff tied for sixth with 24 pars.

STAT OF THE DAY
12 – Johnny Keefer made a tournament-high 12 birdies, three more than any other player. Keefer made birdies on nine of the 18 holes over Monday’s two rounds of play, including five birdies in a seven-hole stretch beginning with his 10th hole played in the final round.
