THE RUNDOWN

SEATTLE, Wash. – For the second-straight day the No. 15-ranked Baylor women’s tennis team was tested until the final match, and the Bears repeated their success with a 4-3 win over Washington at the Huskies’ Nordstrom Tennis Center, Sunday.

Saturday, Baylor (10-1) needed four singles matches after falling in doubles to pick up a win over Washington State, and Sunday Baylor took the doubles point over Washington and split six matches on the singles court to win its sixth-consecutive match.

Angelina Shakhraichuk and Audrey Boch-Collins knotted doubles at one match apiece with a 6-3 win over Washington’s Sedona Gallagher and Yolanda Lin. Then, Mel Krywoj and Alicia Herrero Linana clinched the doubles point for Baylor with a 6-2 win over Vanessa Wong and Sarah-Maude Fortin.

Livia Kraus improved to 8-0 on the season in singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lin to give Baylor a 2-0 lead before Paula Barañano won her 10th-straight singles match dating back to last season by winning 6-3, 6-2 over Tara Chilton to push Baylor to within one match of victory.

In the remaining four matches, Baylor trailed on every court through the first set, but the senior, Shakhraichuk, overcame her first-set loss to pick up the match-clinching win, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Washington took the final three matches.

Baylor improved to 3-1 all-time vs. Washington.

THEY SAID IT

Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano on Sunday’s win over Washington …
“We played with better focus today. Especially at the No. 1 doubles position. Ali [Herrero Linana] and Mel [Krywoj] were way more focused today. They just did the basics better. Overall, we are improving with each week of practice and every match we play. I’m proud of the way we are dealing with adversity and accepting the ups and downs of the match. This weekend was a good step for this team. Road victories are hard fought and a true test of the mental toughness of a team.”

WHAT’S NEXT

Baylor takes a long hiatus before beginning Big 12 play vs. TCU March 4 at home at Noon. The Bears will have an exhibition match at home Thursday vs. Tyler Junior College at Noon.
