THE RUNDOWN

WACO, Texas – The No. 17-ranked Baylor women’s tennis team dominated in a 6-1 win over North Texas Friday at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center. The win improved the Bears to 8-1 on the season, and the Mean Green dropped to 1-3 on the year.

Baylor swept all three doubles matches to get a 1-0 advantage early, including Paula Barañano teaming up with Kristina Sorokolet for the point-sealing, 6-2 win on court No. 2. The junior made her spring debut after missing the fall semester due to her home country’s travel rules for COVID-19, and a back injury early in spring practice. Barañano continued the positive momentum by winning the first match of the night in singles on the No. 5 court over UNT’s Sophia Hummel, 6-1, 6-2. It marked the ninth-consecutive victory for Barañano after an 8-0 spring season in 2020.

After a win from Audrey Boch-Collins on No. 6, Jessica Hinojosa took home the match-sealing win, 6-4, 6-3 over UNT’s Maria Ponomareva, 6-4, 6-3. Alicia Herrero Linana and Mel Krywoj each took singles victories for the Bears as well.

HIGHLIGHTS
• Baylor swept doubles matches to improve to 20-7 on the season this spring.
• Paula Barañano made her debut this spring in Baylor’s ninth match, and she won her ninth-straight match in singles while teaming up with Kristina Sorokolet for a doubles win on No. 2.
• Alicia Herrero Linana remained undefeated in singles this spring with her fifth dual-match win of the year.
• Mel Krywoj’s singles and doubles victories were each the 20th of her Baylor career, respectively.

THEY SAID IT

Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano on Friday’s performance …
“I am really proud of our team, they were locked in and focused. It was difficult because we kept moving the match time back, and that’s never easy. Ultimately, I’m just proud of our team, they were focused, they played with a lot of intensity and got the job done.”

Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano on Paula Barañano’s return to the court …
“We were really excited for Paula. She’s worked really hard this offseason to get back to this level. She had a little lower back injury about six weeks ago. And, actually, it’s just incredible how much she’s recovered from that injury. She looks like she’s in top form, and we’re excited for her. She’s a big part of the team, and we need her.”
