THE RUNDOWN
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 10-ranked Baylor women’s tennis team beat Kansas 4-3, Sunday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. The Bears improved to 19-3 on the season and 6-1 in Big 12 Conference play.

Doubles went down to the wire with Baylor coming up with the starting point after No. 64-ranked Mel Krywoj and Angelina Shakhraichuk ensured the doubles win with a 7-6 (7-3) victory over Kansas’ Sonia Smagina and Vasiliki Karvouni, which broke a 1-1, tie.

The Jayhawks battled back, taking the first two points in singles with wins on the No. 3 and No. 2 courts, respectively. Shakhraichuk evened the count with a win at No. 4 in two sets, which gave the senior 15 dual-match wins on the year to tie Livia Kraus for the team lead.

Kristina Sorokolet won her fourth-straight singles match at No. 6 in two sets to give Baylor a 3-2 advantage before No. 57-ranked Mel Krywoj battled back for the match-sealing win over Smagina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Baylor improved to 24-8 all-time vs. the Jayhawks. Kansas fell to 7-10 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Kristina Sorokolet is one match win away from her 60th career singles win at Baylor.

• The Bears are one win shy of a 20-win season, which would be the first since 2017 and the 14th in program history.

THEY SAID IT

Head Coach Joey Scrivano on the road win in Lawrence …
“I’m proud of the way the ladies responded this entire weekend. They did a great job of being flexible for the K-state match and placing their energy where it needed to be this weekend. K-state & KU play tough and compete very well. They pushed us all weekend. I pleased with the way our players handled the pressure and are learning to managing their state better. It’s never easy to deal with the ups and downs of a dual match and especially on back-to-back days. We need to recover very well and get ready to battle for a tough TCU team on the road Wednesday.”

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor takes on TCU in Fort Worth at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 3 p.m. before the regular-season finale April 18 in Lubbock at Texas Tech.
