THE RUNDOWN
WACO, Texas – Baylor men’s tennis closed out its weekend at the ITA Texas Regionals in style with three titles on Sunday at Waco Regional Tennis Center.

Matias Soto and Nick Stachowiak were crowned the tournament’s doubles champions after winning the red bracket, Finn Bass and Spencer Furman claimed the white bracket title, and Soto was named co-champion of the top-flight singles bracket.

“Really impressive effort from our guys overall,” said interim head coach Michael Woodson. “For some players, it was their first match play since early March, so we were just happy to have them out there competing. Our guys gelled quite well in doubles and competed at an extremely high level which was great to see.”

The day began with an all-Bear final in the red doubles, as No. 2-seed Soto/Stachowiak upset No. 1-seed Charlie Broom/Sven Lah 8-5 to collect the tournament trophy. Meanwhile, top-seeded Bass/Furman brought home the white doubles title by defeating TCU’s Fearnley/Martin 8-6 in the final.

Baylor’s Sebastian Nothhaft also teamed up with Eshan Talluri from Texas for an 8-3 win over Louisiana’s duo of Fillat Gimenez/Xandy Hammitt in consolation doubles.

As singles action got underway, Furman and Soto stayed hot with quarterfinal victories before matching up against each other in the top-flight semifinals. Soto would prevail, leading 5-2 as Furman retired due to injury.

Soto and TCU’s Luc Fomba were named co-champions of the top flight singles bracket, each going 4-0 as the tournament came to a close late Sunday evening. Fomba took out BU’s Broom in a tight three-set match 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, while Nothhaft fell in a consolation match to the Horned Frogs’ Juan Martin 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).

“Matias had a rock solid weekend running through the draw in both singles and doubles,” said Woodson. “He deserves all the success he had as he’s taken his commitment to the game and maximized his potential to a new level this semester.”

Bass and Stachowiak also picked up wins in consolation matches to finish their weekends with 2-1 singles records. Overall, the Bears went 15-9 in singles play and 10-2 in doubles throughout the tournament.

Baylor will make use of an off week before heading to the Big 6 Individuals in Dallas on Nov. 6-8 to compete against fellow Big 12 Conference opponents.
