Bears have 1-shot lead on field, 4-shot lead on all Big 12 programs

THE RUNDOWN
CARROLLTON, Texas – Baylor men’s golf shot 11-over-par 299 in Sunday’s first round to take a one-shot lead at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational.



The Bears (+11) lead the 12-team field by one shot and have a four-shot lead over the next closest Big 12 team. BU is in front of North Texas (+12), Pepperdine (+14), Texas (+15), Oklahoma State (+16), Kansas (+18), Texas Tech (+22), Oklahoma (+23), Iowa State (+25), East Tennessee State (+29), TCU (+32) and Coastal Carolina (+33).



All five members of the BU lineup are in the top-25 individually after the first round. Ryan Grider leads the way at 2-over 74, which is tied for 10th place. Cooper Dossey, Johnny Keefer and Travis McInroe all shot 3-over 75 to tie for 13th place, and Colin Kober carded 4-over 76 to tie for 22nd place. Brandon Hoff, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 53rd place at 9-over 81.



The Bears sat at 16-over through 15 holes, but finished strong with five birdies and seven pars from the four counting scores to combine for 5-under over the final three holes. Grider and Keefer both made birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and a par on No. 18, McInroe birdied No. 16 and finished with consecutive pars, and Dossey capped his round with five consecutive pars.


HIGHLIGHTS

  *   Baylor is tied for the tournament lead in par-4 scoring at 16-over 4.32, ranks third in par-3 scoring at 2-over 3.10 and third in par-5 scoring at 3-under 4.85.
  *   BU’s 56 pars were second-most in the first round, and Baylor tied for second with 11 birdies.
  *   McInroe was one of four players in the field to average par or better on par-4 holes.
  *   Keefer is tied for third in the field in par-3 scoring at 1-under 2.75.
  *   Kober is tied for fourth in par-5 scoring at 2-under 4.50, while Grider and Keefer are tied for ninth at 1-under 4.75.
  *   Dossey is tied for fifth in the field with 13 pars across 18 holes played.
  *   Keefer and Kober are tied for ninth with three birdies apiece.

STAT OF THE DAY
5-under – Baylor shot 5-under over the final three holes, which allowed the Bears to climb to the top of the leaderboard at 11-over. If they remained at 16-over, BU would be tied for fourth and four shots back of the lead.


WHAT'S NEXT

Baylor is in the final group teeing off for Monday’s second round, paired with Texas, North Texas and Pepperdine. Kober is up first at 10 a.m. CT, and he’ll be followed in 10-minute intervals by McInroe, Keefer, Dossey and Grider, respectively.
