Baylor Cross Country: Holmes Leads the Way at Cowboy Jamboree
Women’s team places fourth, men sixth at Oklahoma State meet.

WACO, Texas – Celia Holmes placed seventh in the women’s 6K to lead the Baylor women’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.

“I’m really, really pleased with the ladies,” associate head coach Jon Capron said. “The race went out perfectly for them to talk them into the races we needed to have from them. When a race does that and plays into your hand a little bit, you’re able to maximize and take advantage of it. I’m really happy with their results.”

Holmes, a junior from Waco, Texas, recorded a 6K time of 21:59.0, followed by freshman Lily Jacobs in 16th with a time of 22:16.6. Senior Sarah Antrich placed 25th with a time of 22:45.1, senior Madelaine Johnston took 28th at 22:57.4 and freshman Anna Garner completed the scoring for Baylor with a 37th-place finish in 23:14.6.

“For both Celia and Lily to step up and have big days is awesome,” Capron said. “For them to do it on the same day really does help the bottom line a lot. We had a really good race from Maddy Johnston. Huge to have her back. Sarah Antrich ran incredible. Moved really well during the race and convinced herself that she can be even higher up next time. Then the No. 5 slot, having all of those girls right there was really awesome. Anna Garner continues to be so tough and I’m so proud of her for getting there.”

On the men’s side, junior Ryan Day led the team to a sixth-place finish, placing 29th individually with an 8K time of 25:24.6. Senior Connor Laktasic followed in 36th place with a time of 25:36.9, junior Ryan Hodge finished 52nd at 25:59.4, senior Jeremy Meadows took 68th at 26:22.1 and junior Cal Johnston closed out the Baylor scoring in 83rd with a time of 26:44.6.

“The guys had a bit of a tough day, so we’re kind of ok with the results being competitive,” Capron said. “We went out a little more conservative and were hoping we would have a big move in the back. I’m pleased with their effort. I think we will run faster. There are a couple teams in front of us that I think we can run with another day. Ryan Day did a good job of inserting himself in the right point in the race. Everyone else fought bravely. I’m encouraged.”

The Bears will return to action in two weeks (Oct. 17) at Texas A&M for the Arturo Barrios Invitational and will close the season in Lawrence on Oct. 30 for the Big 12 Championships.

“We have a lot of confidence that we can run with whoever we need to when it’s time,” Capron said. “We’re super capable. I think we can rest up and be a little better race day and be faster. The work we’ve put in will pay off later. I’m pleased.”
