SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Baylor men’s basketball senior MaCio Teague has been selected to the preseason watch list for the 2021 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, as announced Tuesday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The annual award is in its seventh year recognizing the top shooting guards in Division I men’s basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the 20 watch list candidates. Players can be added to the watch list throughout the season, and the list will be trimmed to 10 candidates in late January. Five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee in late February.
The 2021 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award winner will be announced on April 9 along with the remaining members of the Men’s Starting Five, including the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year, the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year, the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year. Watch lists for the remaining awards will be announced throughout this week.
Teague is one of two Big 12 Conference players on the Jerry West Award watch list, joining Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji, and he could face two more players on the list during the regular season with Gonzaga’s Joey Ayayi and Villanova’s Justin Moore.
Additional players on the watch list include Alabama’s John Petty Jr., Austin Peay’s Terry Taylor, California’s Matt Bradley, Connecticut’s James Bouknight, Creighton’s Mitch Ballock, Davidson’s Kellan Grady, Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis, Duke’s DJ Steward, Florida’s Scottie Lewis, Florida State’s MJ Walker, Houston’s Caleb Mills, Iowa’s Joe Wieskamp, Kentucky’s Terrence Clarke, Michigan’s Franz Wagner, Saint Louis’ Jordan Goodwin and Xavier’s Paul Scruggs.
In his first season playing for Baylor in 2019-20, Teague earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors and was unanimously named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. He was recognized on the Myrtle Beach Invitational All-Tournament Team and the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team, and he was a two-time Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Teague led the Bears in scoring in six-consecutive games with at least 15 points in each before injuring his wrist at Texas on Feb. 10. He missed the next two games, then returned to start the final five games before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Baylor went 21-1 in games in which Teague recorded double-figure scoring.
Teague went through the NBA Draft process during the offseason before electing to return to Baylor for his 2020-21 senior season. As a junior, he averaged 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals in a team-leading 32.6 minutes per game. He led the team with an .848 free throw percentage and ranked second on the squad with 60 made 3-pointers in 28 games played, all starts.
Baylor Athletics expects to open the season with 25 percent capacity in the Ferrell Center, and renewed season ticket holders will have exclusive priority.
