I’m thrilled to share that we have a new addition to the Baylor Athletics community as we will publicly announce the hiring of Jean Paul Hebert as our new men’s golf head coach this morning at 10 a.m.

Jean Paul joins us from UNLV, but he is certainly no stranger to Texas, having spent more than a decade at the University of Texas as an assistant coach prior to leading the program at UNLV. I truly believe you all are going to love “JP,” and I’m incredibly confident he will do an outstanding job leading our men’s golf program and representing Baylor.

As we begin to close out a strong spring across multiple sports for Baylor Athletics, today’s note is going to be fairly golf-centric. As such, hop in the proverbial cart with me for a deep drive.

I am thrilled to announce the hiring of our next Men’s Golf Head Coach, Jean-Paul Hebert. Coach Hebert is one of the nation’s most respected golf minds, a Houston native, and a longtime admirer of Baylor through family ties to our university. More on him in a bit.

I want to start by thanking Interim Head Coach Ryan Murphy and all our men’s golf student-athletes, who represented our university exceptionally well throughout the course of this season. Job well done.

Furthermore, I want to take a moment to celebrate the career and legacy of Mike McGraw, our retiring men’s head coach. His impact as a coach in college golf is unmatched, and his leadership in our department for the past decade-plus leaves an undeniable legacy. A huge testament to Coach McGraw was the strength of those expressing interest in our opportunity, a group of coaches whose respect for and belief in Baylor Golf can be traced directly to his investment in our program.

Speaking of golf accolades, it was another great year for our Women’s Golf program. The Bears earned their sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, which begin this weekend in Carlsbad, California. Getting to watch them compete in the NCAA Regional here in Waco, hosted by Ridgewood Country Club, and advance to the NCAA Championships was such a special moment. A huge thank you to our friends at Ridgewood for their hospitality. Simply put, Coach Jay Goble leads one of the nation’s most consistently successful programs, and I hope the entire Baylor family joins me in celebrating the standard of excellence he has established.

It’s been nearly four years since Baylor welcomed a new head coach and the first since I arrived six months ago. With that in mind, I wanted to share a little more about our process and where we landed. We assembled a small internal search team that spent time talking with trusted people across college golf to identify candidates and conduct initial interviews. Because we knew back in January that the position would open following Coach McGraw’s retirement, we were able to work through a more deliberate and extended timeline than is typically possible in a coaching search.

From the beginning, we sought a proven leader and teacher who values Baylor’s distinctive mission and had experience and/or strong ties to golf in the state of Texas. Going through this process and speaking with such a strong group of coaches was a great reminder of the strength of the Baylor brand and the university’s unique, one-of-one mission, which attracts exceptional candidates who, in many cases, may otherwise not be attainable.

Coach Hebert represented the complete package of qualities we were seeking: a coach who will authentically integrate his Christian faith into his program and a proven winner. As head coach at UNLV for the past four seasons, he led his program to NCAA Regionals in each of the past three seasons, the NCAA Championships in 2025, and the 2026 Mountain West Men’s Golf Championship.

Prior to UNLV, Jean-Paul spent 12 years on the men’s golf staff at the University of Texas, where he also played during his college career. During that time as an assistant, he helped lead Texas to two national championships and two national runner-up finishes, and he was named the nation’s top assistant coach in 2020.

Jean-Paul is a household name among men’s golf recruits in our region, as he has spent two decades attracting high-level talent to his programs. Born and raised in Houston, his father, Jay, was the 1960 PGA Champion and 1971 Ryder Cup captain, and his mother, Barbara, is a proud Baylor alumna.

Jean-Paul will share more about his vision for Baylor Men’s Golf at a special gathering in June at Ridgewood Country Club, where we will also celebrate Women’s Golf and honor Coach McGraw for his incredible impact on Baylor Golf. Additional details will be shared soon. In the meantime, please join me in praying for a smooth transition for him and the student-athletes in our men’s golf program in the days ahead.
