Topic:  Building Trauma-Sensitive Support for Student-Athletes

NOTE:  All Athletics Staff are required to attend one (1) session of mental health education this summer. Next week’s session is the 3rd of (6) opportunities.

Summary of Presentation:

This presentation will equip college athletics staff and coaches with the knowledge and tools to better understand and support student-athletes who have experienced trauma. We'll explore the basics of trauma and its potential effects and then delve into practical applications. We’ll learn how to support students with a trauma-sensitive lens and cover methods to care for those experiencing trauma, while also addressing how trauma can impact those supporting the students, as well. By the end, participants will be better equipped to create a more positive and resilient experience for everyone.

Objectives:

  *   Participants will explore foundational information on trauma and how it impacts someone
  *   Participants will learn about core tenants of trauma sensitivity
  *   Participants will practice utilizing a trauma-sensitive approach to interactions within their role as coaches and athletics staff.
