"Breaking Point" is one of my favourite episodes, with hair-raising airborne action (very well staged) and taut drama on the ground. John Finch wrote a brilliant script, providing it with interesting characters
aplenty -- Jill and Derek Robbins, David Ashton and Jack Ridley, Peter Bryant and Chrissie, not to mention Jill and her suspicious mother, Mrs. Crawford.

As for the bombers, John Finch once told our group that director Bob Hird did quite an effective job making two or three aircraft appear to be a couple dozen, recycling the take-off footage from different
angles to lengthen the sequence to more realistic proportions. The filming of "Breaking Point" took place almost thirty years after the time depicted (March 1945), so not many airworthy planes remained available by then.

That, of course, is quite a different from the Flying Fortress situation just after the war. I think of "The Best Years of Our Lives," when Fred Derry (Dana Andrews) views the B-17 graveyard in one memorable
scene. As far as the eye can see, there is nothing but stripped-down bombers, being salvaged for their metal.

Much, of course, has happened since the series was filmed but does anyone know the location for the airfield scenes? And I'm intrigued by the collection of American B-17 (I think) bombers, dressed in RAF livery. No CGI in those days and
they were too impressive to be models, surely?

Did we really have Fortress bombers on hand for filming in the UK 50 years ago? Any answers.much appreciated and my belated thanks to John Finch and his team plus the entire cast and crew for such a wonderful slice of British television
