It’s always shocking to re-realize how Victorian American television and films have always been.<div><br></div><div>Watching Sam and AFAW (and Onedin Line) and hearing such “routine” words as damn, bastard, bitch (we won’t go into bloody), and pregnant and references to prostitution and other bodily matters reminds me how inclusive European standards are and how exclusive (read repressed) ours are. And these are early 1970s programs! I keep turning to my wife and exclaiming “That would never happen on American TV!”</div><div><br></div><div>I remember seeing a bare-breasted dancer in a 1922 Fritz Lang film. No sign that they improved sales; I think only a good <br></div><div dir="ltr">review in a national would help there and reviewers tend to be put off <br></div><div dir="ltr">by anything obviously commercial. Too early to say whether the emphasis <br></div><div dir="ltr">on The Street connection will work, but it should. With THE SPOILS OF <br></div><div dir="ltr">WAR it's worth remember that this was the least sucessul of my series, <br></div><div dir="ltr">and only one episode got in the top ten. It did slightly better on dvd <br></div><div dir="ltr">but nothing to shout about. THE YEAR NEXT YEAR did better. Don't like <br></div><div dir="ltr">my poetry published in extracts; only a poem in its entity can make <br></div><div dir="ltr">sense. Overall I think there are dangers in over-commercialisation <br></div><div dir="ltr">with my stuff as what the audience like is the downbeat quality. <br></div><div dir="ltr">Family at War was massively publicised but its taken over 40 years to <br></div><div dir="ltr">get a repeat, and that has been under-publicised. I'd love to know what <br></div><div dir="ltr">the viewing figures are. Still, its early days and it will take a week <br></div><div dir="ltr">or two to see if the Corie connection makes a difference. <br></div><div dir="ltr">Incidentally, the phrase "Black bitch" was used in a recent BBC <br></div><div dir="ltr">tranmission, and nothing has been said.
