I’ve raised this issue before but....<div><br></div><div>How many among you have any difficulty understanding the Liverpool/Manchester/Yorkshire accents used in such programs as Sam and The Onedin Line (even knowing that many of these performers do NOT use region-appropriate accents, like Edwin Ashton or Captain Baines. Pretty much all the characters in Sam seem to be speaking “the correct way,” although some of them are native Welsh (like Ray Smith).</div><div><br></div><div>As I know the others in this group only from e-mails, I don’t know where in England you live or how you “sound.” This is all a real education for me, so I’d appreciate a little insight. The old saw about parts of countries (Italy, Germany, USA) not being able to comprehend each other (because they were never cogent countries to begin with) applies.</div><div><br></div><div>As Callan once said, I feel like a “niffy twit”! ‘Elp, guv!<br><br><br></div>
