Taking advantage of Richard Veit’s superb episode guides, I’m comparing the Dutch version against his meticulous descriptions of scenes in the Acorn set.<div><br></div><div>The sequence A Restaurant was cut severely by a good couple of minutes (I can never guess why, other than time, as all the “bad” stuff—the occasional swear word, sexist or political remark—remains). The full scene:</div><div><br></div><div>Camera on radio as a female voice announces an obviously “coded” set of remarks, concluding with a report from Hutch. As the camera moves to the door, Ian and Freda enter. The hostess gives Ian a friendly hello, and Freda, probably jealous, remarks “She knows you!” Ian replies that Freda probably knows her as well, recognizes her from her temperature chart. “Oh, yes. Mrs. Rigby!” exclaims Freda. [Surely not Eleanor Rigby?...] Mrs. Rigby comes back to serve them, and Ian “introduces” her to Nurse Ashton, “looking posh out of uniform.” The couple came on the right day, as the restaurant just got its new ration of beefsteak. “We have to keep it strictly for the lads in uniform.” Considering the work that Ian and Freda do, they are certainly entitled to a share. All very friendly, reaching his hand to hers across the table, Ian tells Freda that he takes her to “all the best restaurants.” “With very personal service!” chatters Freda. She looks down, noticing his hand on hers.</div><div><br></div><div>The scene continues as in Richard’s précis.</div><div><br></div><div>These full scenes (scenes cut in the Acorn set) don’t add narrative detail so much as show the human interactions of multiple characters with fine and acute feeling. Splendid acting all around!<br></div>
