I really envy you that you have the pleasure of seeing Sam for the first time. This series is absolutely fantastic - as good as AFAW but in a different way. AFAW will always be my absolute favourite series of all time, but the grittiness and realism of Sam is unparalleled in series of this type in my opinion. It is a superb piece of work by Mr Finch (who drew on his own personal experiences when he wrote it) and the acting is sheer bliss to watch. I think you will be hooked very quickly and won't be able to wait for the next episode, and then the next etc.......

Sam is set in Yorkshire in a fictional mining town called Skellerton - based on Featherstone near Leeds, where John Finch grew up in the 1930's during the depression, when many miners were out of work.

Michael Goodliffe is my favourite actor in Sam, and is superb in the role of Jack Barraclough, Sam's grandfather, giving the performance of his life.

Three years after Sam he committed suicide by jumping out of a hospital window whilst suffering from depression.
