It was certainly common in the early days of Video and DVD releases to edit them in to "Specials suitable for home viewing". The early BBC "Doctor Who" releases were always in an edited full length feature instead of individual episodes as originally shown
for example.<br>
<br>
Even releases in original episodic form often missed off original production idents and end captions. I had some early "Van Der Valk" DVDs like this for example. Network later released them complete and unedited. Even the VT countdown clocks were present on
some episodes!<br>

It's great to hear the Dutch set is more complete but I believe the original break bumpers are missing. As with most current repeats on Talking Pictures TV many end with the, "A Family At War" caption. Originally this faded back into the sandcastle for a few
seconds with the final Granada end caption fading in. TPTV did show this on Episode 5 however, as did the late 1980s repeats on Channel 4. Original and very effective. Some episodes ended with the Granada caption.<br>

I don't understand why the Acorn release edited out the filmed church scene with Troughton and Mason. It was very much past of the story.<br>

Once again I am in complete agreement with your comments and of course John Finch's excellent writings.<br>
<br>
I'm a big fan of archive TV programmes. Such a shame so much has been lost or only surviving as black and white film recordings. Full credit too to Granada Television for preserving this excellent drama complete on their original colour and b&w videotapes.<br>

<div>I am watching AFAW both on the 2015 Just Entertainment Netherlands set (A Family at War: De Familie Ashton) and the 2010 Acorn Media UK set. There is indeed a brief filmed scene, 1 minute, at the outset of the first At the Church segment in the episode
guide, showing the Ashton family AND the first appearance of John’s parents (the “missing” Troughton Mason). David is there, having gotten permission to attend. He kisses his mother and Margaret and wishes John good luck. Mr. Porter bends over his seated wife
to dry her tears. She says she has a headache. Mr. Porter tells John he “better run along, son” when the minister tells the wedding party to begin walking in. Gwyn, attending with Philip, says it’s time to sing The Red Flag [the political anthem]. Sefton snaps
he wants no discussion of politics on such a day. Gwyn comments to Philip he is “glad” to have met Sefton. “He was worth the journey.” Phil smiles.

<div>This scene ties in with the following explanation that Edwin gives Sefton about Harry having to take Celia home.</div>

<div>Such an innocuous, yet narratively relevant, scene being deleted leaves me wondering. </div>

<div>The only other difference between the two editions is the appearance in the Netherlands set of the Granada Colour logo before and after each episode. Whether it’s absence in the Acorn set has to do with British copyright is unknown to me.</div>

<div>I need to review Episode 2 in the Acorn set. Episode 1 in both sets is the same.</div>

<div>I also want to comment how magnificent the acting and writing are. That this was achieved in the “factory process” of television production is all the more a tribute to Mr. Finch and his crew.</div>

home because she had a dizzy spell. So if your screen capture in fact comes from Episode 3, something is definitely amiss. Perhaps Troughton’s contract demanded that he be listed even if his character is mentioned, not shown? Could Jon Finch clear this up???<br clear="none">
