good in the exchanges with Neil Stacy as Carter, but probably my favorite scene is the one in which he recites the sonnet “The expense of spirit in a waste of shame …” to the uncomprehending English class. Remarkably, the scene is not in the novel – it was
invented for the dramatization, and it is perfect. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

so there is some class tension. He’s sent to the school to teach history as a kind of occupational therapy, as he’s had a bad case of shell-shock in the Great War. He’s quite a radical, especially compared to most of the masters. He gives a great performance,
as does Neil Stacy as the science master who runs the OTC. I saw it at the time, and am watching the DVDs now.
