Matador was broadcast (transmitted for you Anglophones) from 1978 to 1982, comprised 24 episodes divided among 4 series, was set in the late Twenties, and concerned rival commercial interests in the context of family relations. The acting
and writing were, as in AFAW, stupendous, and it set a standard for Danish television. There is a DVD set with English subtitles, but it can be played only if you have a multiregion player (they are routinely available for low prices—well worth the money as
so many fine series can be purchased only from England and Europe). Danish Radio set high dramatic standards, just as American and English networks used to have, and some European ones still do.

BTW, Matador was and is the Danish name for the old game Monopoly (the winner is the “killer” who beats his opponent), thus the title of the series. No bulls are killed, or even appear, in the series!

My wife and I have just completed our viewing of the entire series, and I want to compliment Mr. Finch for his magnificent achievement. His writing staff, crew, and actors created a true contribution to television history.
The quality of writing, production, and acting still resonates powerfully after nearly 50 years. The only other series in my experience to linger have been the original Forsyte Saga (might Soames be the spiritual ancestor of Sefton???) and the Danish Matador,
all three being family dramas along broad social and economic lines. AFAW was my introduction to so many fine actors, whose recorded work I have gone on to investigate (e.g., Colin Douglas in Pickwick Papers), even though much of it is lost to the ages. Again,
a wonderful achievement, when TV executives were still interested in Art as one path to Commerce.
