Harry Porter was one of my favourite characters in A Family at War. His warm conversations with daughter-in-law Margaret were always a pleasure to witness, for the pair seemed to understand each other so completely.
Same thing, for that matter, with Edwin and his daughter-in-law, Sheila. Both men maintained a strong sense of loyalty toward these women, who were (in my opinion) not properly appreciated by their husbands, John and David. I think that is one of the things
that makes AFAW so brilliant and timeless: the believable, true-to-life relationships among the characters.

As Patrick Troughton had achieved a level of (perhaps unwanted) fame as the Second Doctor Who prior to AFAW, did he come to you, or did you seek him out to play the completely different, quiet and supporting, role in your drama? Seeing
him interviewed and hearing his thoughts on character acting certainly explains his subdued yet effective position in AFAW.
