Yes, the grainy film in that scene seems the worst scene shot on either film or videotape. It was really very poor quality, presumably location of studio, not sure but it was recorded in film that segment with johns' friend on the table dictating a letter.

The end of the episode when there is shelling taking place and the mother is say comatose and John's friend is close to death, a very moving piece, particularly as it was shot on very grainy film giving it a surreal quality.

I must say though after his return, the tales of him sleeping with the prostitute in a cellar in Antwerp seemed far fetched and poorly played out. Think they override his backstory.
