Hello all, 
  
I've found the original house used for the exterior filming for the Ashton's house in the programme. 
  
It's 13 Chatham Road in Stretford, Manchester, not a huge distance from the Granada studios. 
  
Screencaps from episodes 1 and 39 with comparisons to google street view today are below to hopefully(!) prove it.
