That was indeed a shock. Of all people in the Ashton family, Margaret was the very last one I would have expected to announce this news. Clearly, her affair with Michael Armstrong went much further than we had any reason to suspect, judging from her principled character and sense of morality. Like most things in those years, this too could be blamed on the war.
