1. Edwin-Philip
2. Sefton-Tony
3. Edwin-David
4. Harry-John
(1). I would describe Edwin and Philip as being intellectually matched. Both share a keen interest in politics and the world around them. When they chat without the family this is very evident. Philip went to university and Edwin admires and respects him and what he has achieved. However there is evidently some reluctance to discuss the present political situation with regards to Spain because he knows Jean would be upset to hear Philip's plans to play his part in the war effort.
(2). Sefton is very selfish and set in his ways, he is happy Tony has not gone to fight in the war. He doesn't take Tony's feelings into account and the fact is Tony is keenly aware that his cousins have gone off to fight and feels ashamed he hasn't done the same. Tony's relationship with his father is a difficult one. He wants to become independent and move away from his father.
(3). Edwin supports David and tries to help Sheila by giving her money when he can to help them. I think he knows David is unable to provide the money they need because he can't find work, and when David asks Edwin about a job in the family firm Edwin tells him he can't just sack someone to give David a job, as it would be morally wrong. Edwin knows Sefton won't help David.
(4). Harry and John. Harry and John get on well until John sees him with another woman. Then then their relationship becomes more difficult because John knows his mother is a very difficult woman and understands what drove his father to it. I think Harry loves his son, and John loves his father, but because Celia (his mother) is neurotic this causes a lot of friction.
Thats what I think.... its time to re-watch the whole boxed set as its been about two years, but I think I've got most of my facts right!
