Here is the order in which I would place the various in-law relationships:
1. Margaret / Harry
2. Sheila / Edwin
3. Sheila / Jean
4. John / Edwin
5. Freda / Mrs. Mackenzie
6. John / Jean
7. Ian / Edwin
8. Margaret / Celia
I think Margaret and Harry Porter enjoy the warmest relationship, each willing to open up with their innermost thoughts. Usually, of course, the talks centre upon John.
Sheila and her father-in-law are very close, too, usually discussing David's latest problems.
When Sheila and Jean are in the Anderson shelter with Margaret (in "One of Ours"), the two in-laws speak openly about rumours concerning deliveryman Bob O'Connell.
John and Edwin return from the pub with Harry (in "Salute the Happy Morn"), and all of them are a bit tipsy and in wonderful spirits. John and Edwin seem quite able to confide in each other and speak openly about Margaret -- and even Celia.
In "This Year, Next Year," Freda and Mrs. Mackenzie imbibe several glasses of sherry, and their tongues are loose as they discuss Ian with one another. They get along wonderfully well.
John and his mother-in-law are able to discuss his marital problems rather frankly, and Jean is surprisingly objective.
Although Ian and Edwin remain staunchly businesslike, their relationship with one another is a positive one.
Everyone, I'm sure, will agree with the placement of Margaret and her mother-in-law at the bottom of the list. Celia has such a selfish, unpleasant personality that it is no wonder Margaret approaches her with a confrontational attitude.
