I think Jean Ashton was the worst affected, losing her youngest son eventually killed her.  Other characters were badly affected and struggled to cope, namely Celia Porter after her son John went missing presumed killed, and Sheila Ashton also suffered at the hands of her husband David who was basically a philanderer and womaniser in the RAF.

Least affected were the Briggs family.
