[Afamilyatwar-list] The Military Episodes

I would say “We Could Be a Lot Worse Off” is the most dramatic episode.

The drama is understated and all the more powerful for it.

At the start of the episode Robert has been on shore leave, all appears well and his focus is on cheering up his friend Peter. We are reminded of the everyday concerns of the crew members as their ship prepares to leave the safety of New York harbour.

By the end of the episode, these everyday concerns are insignificant. After Robert’s ship has been torpedoed and the survivors struggle to stay alive on a lifeboat, we realise that Robert is dead - not because we see his death, but because we see he is no longer on the lifeboat.

Throughout the episode there are scenes back in England that move the domestic story forward but also remind us that, for the rest of the Ashtons, life is continuing as normally as the war permits.

As the credits roll, the Ashtons are unaware that this normality is about to be shattered. And the audience never learns the fate of the remaining survivors in the North Atlantic.
