Hi, Christine.
Yes, your father-in-law's observations make a good point. There was much truth in the British complaint that "the Yanks are overpaid, overfed, oversexed, and over here." (Americans, of course, countered with "the Brits are underpaid, underfed, undersexed, and under Eisenhower!")
I had never thought of the film angle that you bring up, but I think that is quite valid as well. Series creator and writer John Finch alludes to American movie stars in at least two places that I can recall. In Episode No. 42 ("The Fundamental Things Apply"), Doris says that Freda thinks Ian Mackenzie is "Robert Taylor and Clark Gable rolled into one." In Episode No. 31 ("I Wanted to Be with You"), when Freda tells John that Clark Gable has joined up, John quips, “Oh, so that’s why the Germans have brought their reserves back from Stalingrad!"

Hello Richard,
The ‘Yanks Go Home’ thing: in my father-in-law’s memoir he mentions being annoyed by the presence of GIs, who always seemed to have nylon stockings and chocolate to give to local girls! I suppose girls might be dazzled by accents they had heard in films, as well.
