[Afamilyatwar-list] Was Celia Correct?

I thought some time about posting this, as this group is so positive in attitude.
Of course, we all “want” our favorites to be, well, favorite in every respect, but living long proves many desires as just that. People are people. Even Cary Grant desired to be...Cary Grant.
Several years ago, Michael Troughton wrote a biography of his father, describing his successful show business career, highlighted by Doctor Who and other impressive credits. His acting in AFAW is damn good.
But being a superb actor apparently meant more to him than being a responsible father and husband. Freedom of the ego and all that. Orson Welles’ daughter wrote a memoir about Orson loading up on gifts at Christmas but otherwise disappearing, as Orson loved to do as part of his magic act. Thomas Mann’s children were desperately unhappy, two committing suicide. One great theme of Mann’s corpus is how the artist “dies to life” in order to create.
The American broadcast journalist Charles Kuralt maintained two quite separate “marriages,” which story became known only after his death. Apparently even Patrick Troughton’s mother never knew of her son’s infidelities (Troughton cheated on one lady friend with another lady friend, while leaving his legal family).
So Doctor Who becomes Doctor WHAT??? Our comedian Bill Cosby has just been revealed as a lethal sex offender.
Thus, my children, is why they created Hollywood.
Google Wikipedia on Patrick Troughton.

Thank you for this, Scott, although I must say that Patrick Troughton's failings as a father come as a disappointment. Harry Porter certainly would not have behaved that way -- except for a quick wartime embrace of Connie Edwards at the First Aid Post! I suppose it is natural for us to assume that the traits of characters, to some extent, also represent those of their actors.

As the Wizard of Oz roared, “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”

Unfortunately, I didn’t follow orders. I saw a review of Michael Troughton’s biography of his father, discussing Patrick’s multiple affairs and abandoning his young children. Put me immediately in mind of Celia’s perpetual accusations of Harry’s alleged attentions to other women (in Harry’s case, no blame attaches).

Anyway, the human conundrum—fine artist, problematic performer.
