In the agonizing episode in which Jean dies, one of the many beautifully written, acted, and edited shots shows Sefton walking towards Edwin after the funeral; Edwin, grief-stricken and mindful of their recent spat, gets up and walks past Sefton, rather to the latter’s shock.
Just the way the scene was played reminded me of the very end of The Third Man, when Alida Valli walks right past Joseph Cotten, smashing the viewer’s expectation that, yes, she’ll fall into his our protagonist’s arms. But NO! A great convention/defying moment in Hollywood cinema.
Edwin walks past Sefton, without ary an acknowledgement!
Give these people a BAFTA!!!
