Mr. Murphy kindly wrote to say that he picked the music used in The Onedin Line, and explained the errors of my “public domain” asseverations. Richard Doubleday picked the theme for AFAW.
Of course, time of transmission was the 70s. Has adequate time passed (almost 50 years) so that copyright is no longer an issue? Certainly, some Russian composers have complex relations with Western countries, like Khachaturian, so their scores are difficult to come by. Only in the past 20 years has Shostakovich’s scores been readily available.
Anthony Isaac is listed as music adviser for the first 6 seasons. Mr. Murphy came on, at least as IMDb knows, in Series 7 and was succeed by someone else for the remainder.
I stand ready to be flogged with a cat-o-nine-tails! Shiver me timbers!!
