I have begun using my lunch hours at work to re-watch A FAMILY AT WAR. Today I saw Episode no. 7, "The War Office Regrets," in which a telegram brings word that John Porter is believed killed. I consider this to be among the most powerful episodes of them all. The writing (by John Finch) and acting are brilliant. Special accolades go to Patrick Troughton (Harry), whose performance is absolutely riveting throughout. Harry's heartfelt encounter with a policeman, outside a pub during the blackout, brings a tear to the eye. Broadly speaking, I think Harry Porter is one of the most sympathetic characters in the series. We feel deeply for him. His scenes with daughter-in-law Margaret are invariably touching. And what he has to endure by living with Celia!
