It is intriguing. Thanks so much for doing this!

What intrigues me is that the cut scenes are so very brief and innocent of any sexual or political content or music rights issues that I’m at a loss to know why they were cut. I understand broadcast/transmission timing requirements vary between the US and UK, but these episodes appear to have been edited for DVD release, as (I understand) Talking Pictures run them complete, as in the Dutch set, minus the bumpers.

Scott,

Your descriptions of restored scenes in the uncut Dutch set are really wonderful -- fascinating to read, sort of like uncovering some "lost" footage up in the attic.

Heretofore, I had not been aware that Jean taught piano lessons. I always assumed that Margaret was the only Ashton with a musical background.

Many thanks, and please keep them coming!

At the 17-minute junction (right after the shower scene in the barracks) there’s a half-minute scene missing from the Acorn set. Philip is preparing to go out while Mrs. Ashton polished the piano. She notes that Philip hasn’t been studying much while home and that she will miss him when he returns to Oxford (a point of debate as Philip wants to get a job instead). Phil comments that the house must feel empty to her when everyone’s away. “It does,” she admits. Phil suggests that she start up giving music lessons again. “Your father wouldn’t appreciate that, would he?” she asks, although she has given it some thought. Don’t tell him, suggest Phil, and his mother gives him a searching look.

A 37-second scene. Why cut it?

More news as it develops.....
