Even more wonderful than AFAW (have to keep these posts group-relevant)!
As far as my American ear can tell, everybody has the proper accent (at least more consistently than the AFAW cast). And the casting is just as eloquent: Michael Goodliffe IS Jack Barraclough (like John McKelvey IS Sefton), and the females are uniformly superb, especially Mona Bruce
There is so much to absorb sociologically and humanly. Folk pressures (gypsies bringing bad luck); political pressures (Means Tests); social pressures (unwed parents); human pressures (desertion, death, family). All this in 39 densely packed episodes.
Fewer boom shadows and hanging microphones!
Really a wonderful achievement; I can see When the Boat Comes In got its mooring in Sam. Imitation IS the sincerest form of ... television.
Right! You lot go out then and get your DVDs! You’ll be gobsmacked! Ay!
